The Trinity Misunderstood
The Quran condemns a Trinity consisting of God, Jesus, and Mary — a position that orthodox Christianity had itself condemned as heresy 200 years before Muhammad was born. The Quran is not refuting the Trinity. It is refuting a straw man.
Key claims
- —Surah 5:116: "Did you say take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" — not the orthodox Trinity
- —Surah 6:101: God cannot have a son because he lacks a female mate — a biological misunderstanding of the doctrine
- —The Collyridian heresy (God, Jesus, Mary) was condemned by Epiphanius in 374 AD — before Muhammad
- —The Trinity teaches one being, three persons — not three gods or a divine family
- —A unitarian God existing alone from eternity cannot be essentially loving — love requires an object
- —The Trinity means God is essentially relational and essentially love before creation
