Jesus and Muhammad

Both Christianity and Islam present their founders as the supreme human exemplars — the models of how a human being ought to live. Christianity presents Jesus as not merely an exemplar but as God incarnate; Islam presents Muhammad as the ideal human being (al-insān al-kāmil) whose conduct is explicitly binding on all Muslims as "a beautiful pattern" (Surah 33:21). Both claims deserve examination against the historical record.

The portrait of Jesus in the primary sources

The Gospels present a portrait of Jesus that has proven extraordinarily resistant to the passage of time. His moral teaching — love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, blessed are the merciful, turn the other cheek, forgive seventy times seven — has been admired across cultures by people who did not share his faith, including atheists, Buddhists, and secular humanists. The consistency of his character across the Gospel accounts — compassion for the outcast, tenderness toward children, firmness against hypocrisy, courage in the face of power, composure under extreme suffering — is the portrait not of a constructed ideal but of a remembered person.

His treatment of women was revolutionary in his cultural context: he spoke publicly with women alone (John 4), he appeared first to women after his resurrection (Matthew 28), he defended a woman caught in adultery against those who would stone her (John 8), he welcomed women as disciples (Luke 10:38–42). In a first-century Jewish context, these were not minor departures from convention.

His treatment of those society had marginalized — lepers, tax collectors, prostitutes, Samaritans, Roman soldiers — consistently extended dignity and relationship to people his culture excluded. He ate with sinners (Luke 15:2), healed Gentiles (Matthew 15:21–28), and said that the greatest in the kingdom of heaven would be the servant of all (Matthew 23:11).

His death was consistent with his teaching. He prayed for the forgiveness of his executioners (Luke 23:34). He promised paradise to a repentant criminal dying beside him (Luke 23:43). He showed no bitterness, no self-pity, no recantation of his message in the face of the most painful form of execution the ancient world had devised.

This portrait — attested in multiple independent sources, consistent across the Gospel accounts, admired across cultures by people with no theological stake in affirming it — is the standard against which Muhammad is properly compared, not as a polemic but as an honest historical examination.

The portrait of Muhammad in Islamic sources

The appropriate sources for evaluating Muhammad's character are the same sources Islam uses to authenticate his prophethood: the Quran and the hadith literature — particularly Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the two most authoritative Sunni hadith collections. The following are drawn exclusively from these sources, not from hostile external accounts.

The marriage to Aisha: Sahih Bukhari records clearly:

The Prophet married me when I was six years old and consummated the marriage when I was nine years old.

This account is confirmed in Sahih Muslim (8:3309, 8:3310, 8:3311) with consistent detail. Muslim scholars have responded in several ways: that childhood marriage was culturally normal in 7th-century Arabia; that Aisha's age may have been misreported in the hadith tradition; or that the Islamic example of Muhammad as an eternal model must be understood in its historical context.

Each response creates problems. The "culturally normal" defense concedes that Muhammad's conduct was culturally conditioned rather than divinely exemplary — but the Quran presents him as the eternal, universal exemplar whose conduct is binding for all Muslims at all times. If his conduct in this area is relativized to 7th-century cultural norms, the same relativization must be applied to all his other conduct — undermining the claim of universal exemplarhood. The "misreported age" defense challenges the reliability of the most authoritative hadith collections — the same collections on which most of Islamic practice is based. If Sahih Bukhari can be wrong about Aisha's age, on what basis is it reliable about the five pillars, the prayers, or the other practices of Islam?

Military campaigns and the treatment of opponents: The Sira (biographical literature) and hadith record Muhammad's authorization of the killing of critics who wrote poetry against him. Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf, a Jewish poet who criticized Muhammad, was assassinated by a Muslim man who deceived him to gain access — an assassination Muhammad explicitly authorized (Sahih Bukhari 5:59:369). The poetess Asma bint Marwan was similarly killed at Muhammad's instigation (recorded in Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Sa'd, though not in the canonical hadith).

The raid on Khaybar, the execution of the men of the Banu Qurayza (between 600 and 900 men, according to Islamic sources), and various punitive military expeditions are recorded without apology in the Sira and hadith as legitimate prophetic conduct. These actions may be explainable in the context of 7th-century tribal warfare — but they are presented in Islamic sources not merely as historically conditioned responses but as part of the prophetic sunna (practice) that Muslims are called to emulate.

The moral exemplar standard and its implications

The Islamic claim is not merely that Muhammad was a good man or an effective leader. The Quran makes an explicit, binding, universal claim:

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.

"An excellent pattern" (uswatun hasana) is not a cultural description. It is a normative claim that Muhammad's conduct is the standard of excellent human behavior — not just for 7th-century Arabs but for "anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day." The phrase is not conditioned by time or culture.

This standard creates a significant problem. Muhammad's marriage to a six-year-old child — on the Islamic account — is part of the excellent pattern that God has designated for all believers. Countries in the Islamic world that set minimum marriage ages (Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey) are departing from the prophetic sunna in doing so. Islamic reformers who seek to raise marriage ages are working against the normative example that Surah 33:21 establishes.

The contrast with Jesus is instructive not as a polemic but as a genuine comparison of what each religion holds up as the human ideal. Jesus taught enemies to be loved, the last to be first, the powerful to serve the weak, the truthful to accept suffering rather than cause it. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) is the most demanding ethical standard in the world's religious literature — and Jesus's own life was consistent with it to the point of death.

The question this raises is theological as much as moral: what does each religion's picture of its founder reveal about the God each religion worships? The God who is best described by the conduct of Jesus is different from the God who is best described by the conduct of Muhammad. And the character of God is precisely what each religion is ultimately about.
