What Christianity Offers That Atheism Cannot

This Foundation has examined what atheism cannot explain. This final section states what Christianity positively offers — not as an argument from comfort but as an argument from coherence. Christianity does not merely plug the gaps that atheism leaves. It provides a unified account of reality within which the existence of the universe, the objectivity of morality, the reliability of reason, the reality of consciousness, and the universal human longing all make sense simultaneously.

A coherent account of why anything exists

The universe exists. It began. It is governed by mathematical laws of extraordinary precision and elegance. On Christianity, these facts have a unified explanation: a rational, personal God freely chose to create a universe that reflects his rationality and his character. The universe is mathematical because its Creator is rational. It began because it is created. It is fine-tuned for life because its Creator intended it for conscious beings made in his image.

On atheism, each of these facts is brute and unexplained. The universe just exists — no reason. Its beginning is a boundary condition with no explanation on the other side — science cannot address it. Its mathematical structure is a "remarkable coincidence" (Wigner's "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics") — no account available. Its fine-tuning is either an extraordinary accident or requires positing an infinite multiverse for which there is no direct evidence.

Christianity's account is not merely emotionally satisfying. It is explanatorily superior — it accounts for more evidence with fewer ad hoc assumptions.

Objective morality that is actually binding

Christianity grounds objective moral obligations in the nature of a personal God who is the standard of goodness — not subject to a moral standard above himself, but the source and ground of all moral reality. Human moral intuitions are not evolutionary accidents or cultural agreements. They are the imago Dei — the image of a morally serious God reflected in the consciousness of beings made to know him.

This account explains why moral intuitions feel binding rather than optional. They are not preferences we happen to share — they are perceptions of an objective moral reality rooted in the character of God. The sense that cruelty is genuinely wrong, that human beings have inherent dignity, that justice matters — these intuitions are trustworthy because they correspond to something real.

Atheism cannot provide this. As Michael Ruse and Richard Dawkins both acknowledge (from different directions), morality on a naturalist account is ultimately an adaptive illusion. Christianity says: your moral intuitions are real, because the God who made you is real, and his character is the standard to which they correspond.

The resurrection as verified entry point

Unlike the claims of other worldviews, Christianity's central claim — the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth — is a historical event that can be evaluated by the tools of historical inquiry. It either happened or it did not. The evidence is examined in detail in the Why Christianity Foundation. The conclusion of that examination is that the resurrection is the most historically parsimonious explanation for the five facts that virtually all scholars — including atheist and agnostic New Testament historians — acknowledge.

The resurrection is not a philosophical argument. It is a historical event. If it happened, it demonstrates that the God of Christianity is real, that Jesus is who he claimed to be, and that the Christian account of human existence — its diagnosis of sin, its account of redemption, its promise of resurrection — is true.

Atheism has no equivalent. It has no historical event that, if true, would demonstrate the truth of atheism. It is a default, a negative, an absence of affirmation. Christianity is a positive claim about a specific event that either happened or did not.

The invitation to examine honestly

The arguments in this Foundation — and in the Why Christianity Foundation — are not intended to compel belief. Belief cannot be compelled. What they are intended to do is remove the assumption that atheism is the obviously rational default, that only the credulous or the uninformed would believe in God, that serious intellectual inquiry leads inevitably away from Christianity.

That assumption is false. The most serious intellectual inquiry — into the origin of the universe, the existence of consciousness, the objectivity of morality, the reliability of reason, the fine-tuning of physical constants, the historical evidence for the resurrection — does not lead away from Christianity. It leads toward it.

Antony Flew, from a position of lifelong atheism, followed the evidence where it led. Alister McGrath, from a position of committed Marxist atheism, examined the evidence and found Christianity more compelling. C.S. Lewis, as "the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England," followed the argument to its conclusion.

The question this Foundation puts is simple: have you actually examined the evidence? Not the caricature — not the Sunday-school God, not the religion-of-the-gaps, not the tribal comfort blanket — but the actual philosophical and historical case? The case from cosmology, from the hard problem of consciousness, from the moral argument, from the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism, from the historical resurrection?

What Christianity Offers That Atheism Cannot
