Am I Really Saved?

Among the most private and distressing experiences in the Christian life is the question that arrives in the dark — often after a period of failure, or a season of spiritual dryness, or an episode of doubt — that asks whether any of it is real. Whether the faith that seemed so certain at one point is actually genuine. Whether you are actually saved.

This question can take many forms. "What if I never really believed — what if it was just emotion or social pressure?" "What if I've committed the unforgivable sin?" "What if my faith is too weak to count?" "What if God's patience has finally run out?" "What if I fell away in Hebrews 6 means me?"

What the New Testament actually says about assurance

The New Testament addresses assurance directly, and what it says is more definitive than many Christians realize. The standard for assurance in the New Testament is not the quality of your faith, the consistency of your behavior, the intensity of your feeling, or the absence of doubt. The standard is the object of your faith.

John 6:37

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

John 10:27–29

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

Romans 8:38–39

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

These are not qualified promises. "I will never cast out" is an absolute statement. "No one will snatch them out of my hand" is an absolute statement. "Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us" is an absolute statement.

The assurance the New Testament offers is not based on the believer's performance or consistency. It is based on God's faithfulness to his own promise and his own character. The God who promised does not break his promises. The God who saved does not unsave.

The question of genuine faith

The New Testament does teach that not every profession of faith is genuine. "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 7:21). This is a real warning. But it applies to people whose lives show no evidence of genuine turning toward God — people who are using the language of faith without any actual relationship with Jesus. It is not aimed at the person who is genuinely worried about whether their faith is real.

Here is the diagnostic: the person who has no genuine faith in God is not, typically, worried about whether their faith is genuine. They are not losing sleep over it. They are not asking the question with anguish. The fact that you are asking the question — that you care whether your faith is real, that the possibility of being separated from God is terrifying to you — is itself evidence that something real is happening in you.

The New Testament's description of someone with genuine faith is not "someone who never doubts" or "someone who never sins" or "someone who always feels close to God." It is "someone who hears my voice and follows me" (John 10:27). Following is not a feeling — it is a direction. It is the persistent orientation of a life toward Jesus, through every stage of doubt, dryness, failure, and confusion. The question is not "do I feel certain?" The question is "am I following?"

The 'unforgivable sin' — what it is and what it is not

Many Christians in a season of anxiety about their salvation become terrified that they have committed the "unforgivable sin" — the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that Jesus describes in Matthew 12:31–32 and Mark 3:29 as the one sin that will not be forgiven.

This sin is described in its context: the Pharisees, having seen Jesus perform miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, attributed those miracles to Beelzebul (the devil). The unforgivable sin is the deliberate, final attribution of the Holy Spirit's work to Satan — the hardened, persistent, willful rejection of what the Spirit is clearly doing, in a way that closes off any remaining openness to the truth.

The person who is worried that they have committed the unforgivable sin has not committed it. The unforgivable sin, as described, is a state of complete, hardened, final rejection of God — the condition of someone who has permanently closed themselves to the Spirit's work. A person in that state does not worry about whether they have committed it. They are not worried about God at all. The very fact that you are worried — that you are reaching toward God even while wondering whether it is possible — is the evidence that the Spirit is still working in you and that the door is still open.

The unpardonable sin is not any particular act, but a settled attitude of hostility to God. It is not committed in a moment of weakness or doubt. It is not the fear that one has committed it. It is the permanent, final, deliberate rejection of God that closes off all possibility of repentance. If you are worried that you have committed it, you almost certainly have not — because the worry itself is evidence of a heart that has not finally closed itself to God.

Am I Really Saved?

"Whoever comes to me I will never cast out" (John 6:37). "No one will snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). "Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us" (Romans 8:39). These are absolute statements. The person worried about whether their faith is real is almost certainly not the person Jesus is warning about in Matthew 7:21.
